Module 10 Problem Solving

Module 10
Problem Solving Activities

Don't forget that each module has multiply opportunities for problem solving.  Included below is Problem Solving 4 which has 6 different problems for your students.

Problem Solving Activity 4

Area of Composite Shapes

3.MD.7,7d
Module 10  Lesson 8
Differentiation Activity

Two students will create 2 shapes either by making them up, drawing playing cards A-10, or rolling dice for the dimensions (at the same time).  They will draw the shapes on the grid paper connected to form a composite or complex shape.  They can put them together or overlap them.  They will trade the shape with their partner who will figure the area of the shape. Students compare and check each other's work.

Grid Paper  (may need more than 1 per student)

Finding Area

3.MD.5,5a,5b  3.MD.7,7a,7b
Module 10   Lesson 6
Differentiation Activity

Students take turns drawing cards and creating the shape on grid paper with the dimensions of the cards.  Students compare the area and see who has the greatest.  The student with the greatest area wins a point.  The student with the most points after five rounds is the winner.

Drawing Shapes to Find Area

3.MD.5,5a,5b  3.MD.7,7a,7b
Module 10   Lesson 3
Differentiation Activity

Students take turns rolling dice and creating the shape on grid paper with the dimensions of the dice.  Students compare the area and see who has the greatest.  The student with the greatest area wins a point.  The student with the most points after five rounds is the winner.

Comparing Area Units

3.MD.5,5a,5b  3.MD.6
Module 10   Lesson 2
Differentiation Activity

Pairs of students find the area of note cards, books, or something similar with pattern block squares and base-ten blocks.  They will compare their area and what they notice.  You can use the printable pattern block squares if needed.

Pattern Block Squares

Area with Pattern Blocks

3.MD.5,5a,5b  3.MD.6
Module 10  Lesson 1
Differentiation Activity

Students use square pattern blocks to measure rectangles and squares either around the classroom, or ones that you have set up for them. They can use multiplication or repeated addition to find the area of those squares and rectangles.
If you do not have enough square pattern blocks, use the printable below on colored paper or cardstock.

Mrs. Devert - Using Gauge in the Classroom

Thank you Katey Devert for sharing your Gauge work with us!  Please comment, share, and ask questions by commenting below.   You can now click on reactions (cool, interesting) at the bottom of the post!

Printable 3rd Grade Standard Reflection Sheet

Some questions to ponder and respond to in the comment section:
  1. What do you want to make sure to remember about the video?
  2. What might you want to try in your classroom?
  3. Did it reaffirm any of your practices?
  4. If this is similar to your structure, do you have anything to add?
  5. Are there pieces you would like to see more in depth?
  6. What questions do you have for the teacher?

Division Facts

3.OA.4-7\
Module 9  Lesson 9
Differentiation Activity

Students each put 3 counters on the game board.  They draw a card and solve the expression.  If the quotient matches one that their counter is covering, they can remove it.  The first student to remove all their counters is the winner.

Game Board and Cards

Sixes Multiplication and Division Facts

3.OA.2,4-7
Module 9 Lesson 8
Differentiation Activity

Have one student draw an array to show a sixes fact.  The other student will write all the multiplication and division facts that match that array. Students then alternate roles.

Grid paper

Associative Property

3.OA.3,5,6
Module 9  Lesson 6
Differentiation Activity

Students take turns rolling 3 dice and finding the product of the three numbers.  They must justify the order in which they multiplied.

Multiplication Mania

3.OA.1,4
Module 9  Lesson 5
Differentiation Activity/Fundamentals Game

Students draw three cards and choose two of them to multiply.  They cover the product with a counter.  The first to get four in a row is the winner!

Mult. Mania Game

Square Numbers

3.OA.9
Module 9 Lesson 4
Differentiation Activity

Students use a multiplication chart to color in square numbers.  They can compare with a partner and discuss the patterns that they see.

Multiplication Chart

That's a Fact

3.OA.4,7
Module 9  Lesson 3
Differentiation Activity/Fundamentals Game

Students will draw cards and multiply the two numbers.  They will cover up the product with the counter.  The first to get four in a row is the winner.

That's a Fact Game

Sixes Multiplication Game

3.OA.4,5,6
Module 9  Lesson 2
Differentiation Activity

Students place 2 counters each on the game board.  They first player draws a sixes multiplication expression and solves finds the product.  If they have a counter covering that number, they can remove it.  The second player does the same.  The first player to remove both counters is the winner.

Sixes Multiplication

3.OA.4,5,7
Module 9  Lesson 1
Differentiation Activity

Students will cut out the sixes multiplication cards and quiz each other in pairs.  Each student must explain the strategy they used to solve the expression.
