Three-Act Brownie Task

This Three-Act Task comes from Janeal Maxfield.  It is geared toward fifth grade standards, but the organization and process help to see how to give a task.  Here is the link to the videos and acts.

Differentiation Activity

Students draw two cards and try to find equivalent whole numbers and common fractions.  If they get a match, they get to keep the cards.  The student with the most cards at the end, wins the game.

Differentiation Activity

Students draw three cards and place them in order from least to greatest fraction.  Students can take turns and order them or they can order them and get a point for each card in the correct order.  After 5 rounds, the student with the most points wins.

Comparing Fractions

Differentiation Activity

Student draw cards and figure out where they would go on the number line.  Students then figure out who has the greater fraction.  The student who has the greater fraction will keep both cards.  The student with the most cards is the winner.

Differentiation Activity

Students cuts out the cards in partners and sort them by fractions that are equivalent.  They can use the printable number line or draw their own to prove their thinking.

3-Digit Difference

Differentiation Activity

Students can use three-digit cards from the Number Case or generate their own with playing cards or dice.  They then find the difference between the two numbers.  The student who records the greatest difference for 1 round receives a point.  The student with the most points after 5 rounds wins.

Differentiation Activity

Students will have a combination of both wallet and price tag cards.  They will use strategies including the algorithm to find the difference between the tag and the wallet.

Comparing Fractions

Differentiation Activity

Students will each draw a fraction card and decide who has the greater fraction.  The student with the greater fraction gets to keep both cards.  When all cards are gone, the student with the most cards is the winner!

Comparing Unit Fractions

Students in partners will each draw one card.  They will compare their cards and decide who has the greater unit fraction.  That student will get to keep both cards.  The student with the most cards at the end, wins!

Differentiation Activity

Students use the fraction sheet to shade a fraction and have their partner copy it with an equivalent fraction directly below.  Students alternate roles and do the same for page two with fourths and eighths.  They can then use the cards for mix and match games.

Differentiation Activity

Students cut out the cards and place them face up.  They then sort as equivalent fractions.  As student gain confidence with these fractions, they add in page three of the cards.  They can then place all the cards face down, draw one card and compare their fraction with their partner.  The student with the larger fraction, wins those cards.  The student with the most cards at the end, is the winner.
